INITIAL CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF AH36 STEEL IN FLOWING OF SEA WATER UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS

The effect of velocity on initial electrochemical behavior and corrosion state of AH36 shipbuilding structural steel was studied in the laboratory. Open-circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and linear polarization were used to evaluate the electrochemical properies. Corrosion rate was determined by mass loss method. The results showed that the surface electrochemical behavior changed rapidly in a short time and was stable up to 7 days before achieving a stable value. There was a difference between samples in flowing compared with stationary samples. Velocity of sea water flow did not only accelerate the higher steel corrosion rate in the same conditions, but also cause uneven surface corrosion due to non-uniform self-dissection of the corrosion product.
